Earth’s Rotation: Definition, Time, and Its Effects

Jakarta – Earth is a planet located in the third position from the sun. The place where the life of these living things takes place will experience daily circulation or is called Earth Rotation resulting in a change in time.

Earth will experience two types of circulation in each cycle. This blue planet will rotate on its axis which is rotating and also rotating around the sun or evolving. Earth’s rotation and revolution occur in different periods of time.

Definition and Time of Earth’s Rotation

Earth’s rotation is the rotation of the earth on its axis or axis. Earth will move from west to east or appear counterclockwise. Although the earth undergoes a cycle, the living things in it do not rotate with it. This is due to the earth’s gravity.

Earth’s rotation will last for 23 hours 56 minutes or 24 hours less 4 minutes for one rotation. In this event of the earth’s rotation, the atmosphere that surrounds the earth will also rotate.

Due to Earth’s Rotation

The rotation of the earth can cause several events that have an impact on the life of living things on earth. Quoted from the website of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek), the following events are caused by the rotation of the earth:

1. Occurrence of Day and Night

Alternation of day and night is a result of the rotation of the earth. Earth is divided into two parts, namely facing the sun and back to the sun. Areas of the earth will experience daylight when they are on the part facing the sun. Meanwhile, the part facing away from the sun will experience night time.

2. Time Differences in Different Regions

Earth Rotation This also results in time differences in different regions. For example, Japanese time is two hours ahead of Indonesian time. Meanwhile, when compared to countries in the European region, Indonesian time will be around 6-7 hours faster.

The area facing the sun will always alternate. The change in the area resulted in the time difference between one area and another.

3. Daily Pseudo Motion of the Sun

This daily motion of the earth also causes the apparent daily motion of the sun. Every day, we seem to see the sun is rotating from east to west or which is marked by sunrise and sunset.

In fact, what actually happened was the movement of the earth. That is, the sun is not moving but the earth is moving. This imprecise motion is often referred to as the apparent daily motion of the star.

4. Bending of Sea Water Flow

The occurrence of waves on the beach and ocean currents is caused by the wind. These ocean currents turn clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. Meanwhile, in the Northern Hemisphere the ocean currents will be counterclockwise. This deflection is caused by the rotation of the earth because the earth will rotate under moving objects, such as water and air.

5. Differences in Earth’s Gravitational Acceleration

Earth Rotation resulting in the direction of motion away from the center. As a result, the shape of the earth becomes imperfect and the diameter of the poles is smaller than the equatorial region. This condition causes the polar regions to experience faster gravity.
