Kiev government claims to have thwarted coup attempt

The Ukrainian government says it has thwarted a coup. If no action had been taken, the coup would have happened next week, President Zelensky said. As evidence for the coup plans, he argued that intelligence agencies have audio recordings with Russian voices in their possession.

“We are not only challenged by Russia, but also have great internal challenges. I have received information that a coup d’état would take place in our country on December 1 or 2,” Zelensky said at a news conference. He gave no further details about the plot. Moscow has immediately denied involvement in the matter.

tensions

Tensions between Russia and Ukraine have risen sharply in recent weeks. The Kremlin is sending more and more troops and equipment to the border area with Ukraine, something that Kiev and NATO say could indicate military escalation and a Russian invasion of Ukraine.

But Russia denies that it intends to do so and says it can place soldiers wherever it wants on its own territory. It calls Western reports of a possible Russian attack false and alarming.
