Cologne (dpa) – In the fight against anti-Semitism, the competence in the judicial authorities is to be strengthened. This was decided by the federal and state anti-Semitism commissioners at their joint autumn meeting in Cologne. There is often great uncertainty among public prosecutors as to whether a crime should be classified as anti-Semitic or not, said the North Rhine-Westphalian anti-Semitism commissioner Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger on Friday. The aim must be that uniform standards are applied when evaluating an act.

For this reason, all public prosecutors should receive guidelines on how to recognize anti-Semitic crimes, according to a resolution of the “Joint Federal-State Commission to Combat Anti-Semitism and Protect Jewish Life” (BLK). In addition, the topic of anti-Semitism should be anchored in the training of public prosecutors and judges. The Justice Ministers’ Conference should ensure that anti-Semitism officers are used in the public prosecutor’s offices. In addition, she should implement the EU’s anti-Semitism strategy in the judiciary, called the BLK.
