The Government has a plan to donate vaccines to third countries. As OKDIARIO has published, Pedro Sánchez himself has boasted that he has already donated 30 million doses of vaccines against Covid destined for poor countries or with fewer resources. And he has ensured that, for 2022, he prepares another donation of 20 million dose. Well, he has lied again: his own General State Budgets already in the Congress of Deputies indicate that departure and quantify it at 17 million. Translated: Sánchez has been invented 3 million solidarity vaccines.
The Government has flaunted what it has already called the vaccine plan solidarity. It is a program that has been growing throughout 2021 and that details, according to the Executive of Pedro Sánchez, a specific batch of 20 million vaccines that must be delivered in the first quarter of 2022.
But that is not what appears in the General State Budgets, which reduce this solidarity action to 17 million doses of vaccines. Three million less than officially announced. The initial 30 million vaccines, delivered throughout 2021, have been delivered. But, of course, it is that, in this case, the 30 million vaccines are financed by European funds. That is not the case with the remaining 20 million: those that must be delivered throughout 2022. All these doses will be paid for with Spanish taxes. Thus, the new Budgets collect a game of 293 million euros for “solidarity vaccines.” Spain has also decided to share its scientific knowledge releasing a patent on the virus detection test developed by the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC).
The Prime Minister personally committed to this delivery because, according to his version, Spain is “in a position to demonstrate that you can lead the national vaccination and elead global vaccination at the same time”. The Government of Spain, in this way, ensures that it intends to donate, at least for the moment, a total of 30 million doses of vaccines against Covid-19 in 2021, of which more than 7.5 million have reached Latin America ; and another 20 million doses next year, for a total of 50 million doses. The budget calculations do not support, however, this forecast and reduce it to 47 million vaccines.
What the Government of Pedro Sánchez will have shared is the knowledge so that the advancement of science and society can also develop from those third countries. For this reason, Spain has released the aforementioned patent for the serological test of the CSIC for the detection of the virus and does not rule out new releases of public patents.
The World Health Organization has set the goal of vaccinating 40% of the world’s population before the end of 2021 and 70% by mid-2022. In this sense, Sánchez has already stated on several occasions: “As long as we are not all and all safe from the virus, we will not really be protected. Solidarity is not a territorial issue, but a humanitarian one. Faced with a global health problem, the response must be coordinated and multilateral.
Spain thus follows the route agreed at the Social Summit of the European Union in Porto and in the non-paper Vaccines for All focused on three pillars: sharing knowledge, increasing vaccine production and accelerating their distribution. Sánchez explained the strategy: “We need to maximize global production capacity of vaccines, guarantee the proper functioning of supply chains, eliminate trade barriers and logistical obstacles, and ensure sufficient transport, storage and distribution capacity ”.
