Australia to send peacekeeping force to Solomon Islands (prime minister)

Australia will deploy military and police peacekeeping forces to the Solomon Islands, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced Thursday, hoping to stem two days of violent unrest in the capital Honiara that threatens to topple the government.

“Our purpose here is to bring stability and security,” Morrison said, noting that he received a request for assistance from Solomon Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare.
