The contract was concluded with a consortium of Metroprojekt and SUD Architekt Polska, and its value for the project is PLN 59.8 million net. The commencement of underground construction works is planned in Łódź Fabryczna in 2023. The contract provides for the execution of a construction design and studies for the tunnel and railway line with accompanying infrastructure. According to unofficial calculations, the entire tunnel may cost up to PLN 1.5 billion.
It is the first of the CTH investments to enter the design phase and have an environmental decision. The tunnel will be a key part of the railway line connecting Warsaw with Łódź, Poznań and Wrocław. For its construction, the CPK Company received co-financing from EU funds under the CEF instrument (“Connecting Europe Facility”). Almost 30 percent was used to build the tunnel. funds allocated to Poland in the last CEF 2014-2020 competition, i.e. almost PLN 60 million. Its length is 4 km and it will be intended for long-distance trains, mainly for high-speed railways. This is an element of the so-called spokes No. 9, i.e. a new railway route from Warsaw through the CPK, Łódź and Sieradz and further to Wrocław and Poznań.
In Łódź, high-speed trains will only stop at the Łódź Fabryczna station. The exit of the tunnel to the surface is planned to the south-west of Łódź Kaliska, in the vicinity of the Retkinia estate and the existing railway line No. 14. Then the route will lead west – towards Sieradz, behind which there will be a fork towards Poznań and Wrocław.
