CUPERTINO, iNews.id – Apple sued NSO Group and its parent company, OSY Technologies. They are charged with alleged surveillance and targeting of US Apple users with spyware Pegasus.
Apple said it seeks to prohibit the NSO Group from using any Apple software, services or devices to prevent further abuse. The iPhone maker is the latest in a string of companies and governments to sue NSO.
Earlier this month, US officials placed the company on a trade blacklist. NSO is also facing legal action or criticism from Microsoft Meta, Alphabet and Cisco. Launching the Reuters page on Wednesday (11/24/2021), NSO is suspected of being involved in circumventing the security of products made by these companies and selling them in the form of hacking tools to foreign governments.
In a statement, NSO, said it only sells its tools to governments and law enforcement agencies and has safeguards in place to prevent misuse. They say that “thousands of lives” have been saved through the use of the device.
“Pedophiles and terrorists can freely operate in technology shelters, and we provide governments with legitimate tools to fight them. NSO Group will continue to advocate for the truth,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
In a lawsuit filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, Apple said NSO tools were used in a joint effort in 2021 to target and attack Apple customers.
Not only that US citizens have also been monitored by NSO spyware on mobile devices that can and do cross international borders. Apple alleged that the NSO Group created more than 100 fake Apple ID user credentials to carry out its attacks.
