WhatsApp has allowed you to change the speed at which voice notes are read since the start of the year and is now beta testing the same speed control for audio messages.
An audio message is a voice note that you transferred to another chat, and in this transfer process it loses its play speed button, although it remains the exact same message. The button, which allows to choose the speed 1.5x or 2x, disappears.
WhatsApp does its due diligence when it comes to introducing a feature. So it may take a while for the feature to arrive on iOS and then Android.
In the meantime, maybe just send quick and short voice notes.
