The Ministry of Defense on Tuesday confirmed the news published in the German army blog “Augen Geradeaus” that officials and soldiers had agreed on Monday to include Covid-19 in the list of vaccines that are mandatory for soldiers.
The decision has yet to be formally incorporated into army regulations, the ministry said.
On Monday, 1,215 cases of Covid-19 were registered in the army and among civilian employees of the Ministry of Defense.
The number of new cases of Covid-19 registered in Germany has risen by 45,326 in the past 24 hours, the state disease control agency said on Tuesday. There have also been 309 deaths from Covid-19, and a total of 99,433 people have died from Covid-19 in Germany since the start of the pandemic.
The U.S. State Department on Monday urged Americans not to travel to Germany because of the growing prevalence of the coronavirus there, and to make sure they are fully vaccinated if they do travel to Germany.
Several German Länder have imposed stricter restrictions on people who have not been vaccinated against Covid-19 and have called on non-vaccinated people to become vaccinated.
However, a significant minority have refused to be vaccinated, prompting the German health minister to issue a warning about the consequences for non-vaccinators.
“By the end of this winter, almost everyone in Germany (..) will have been vaccinated, recovered or died,” German Health Minister Jens Span said on Monday.
About 68% of Germany’s 83 million people have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, which is less than the government’s target of 75%.
