Many pet fans keep several animal companions at the same time. The dog / dog and cat / cat combinations are particularly popular. But different animal species are also often kept together: above all horses and dogs.
The result of the customer survey among multi-animal keepers of Uelzener Versicherung, special insurer for animals, is clear: one third of multi-animal keepers keep two dogs in their household.
The representative survey by the Industrieverband Heimtierbedarf (IVH) eV and the Zentralverband Zoologischer Fachbetriebe Deutschlands eV (ZZF) also confirms this: From 2019 to 2020, the dog population in Germany rose by 600,000 and the cat population by one million animals. One of the reasons for this is that numerous existing animal households have given another pet a home: in 30 percent of dog households and 40 percent of cat households, two conspecifics were already living together in 2020 – significantly more than in the previous year.
The double horse keeping is also way ahead on the popularity scale: According to a survey by Uelzener Versicherung, 31 percent keep two horses. While every fifth household with multiple animals (20.18%) houses two cats.
“We very much welcome this trend”, says Susanne Werner, veterinarian at Uelzener Versicherung, “especially with cats that are kept entirely or predominantly in the apartment, multiple keeping is absolutely desirable. Many velvet paws don’t like to be alone. “
The most popular mixed animal husbandry is the combination of dog and horse (10.65%). “Apparently many horse lovers are also dog lovers. This also corresponds to our experiences that the team and I have had privately in the horse stable, ”says Dr. Felix Garlipp, Head of Portfolio Management at Uelzener Versicherung, himself the lucky owner of a horse and a dog.
Not quite as popular is keeping dogs and cats together (3.08%), cats and horses (1.14%) and dogs, cats and horses (0.26%).
