Charlotte Gainsbourg evokes distress on her return to France
In July 2021, in the columns of the Parisian, the singer and actress, now director of a documentary, already evoked with her mother this painful passage that she crossed. ” I have been in distress. Finally, I was not doing very well on my return, and there, it was you who helped and supported me »She said, addressing her mother, present during this exceptional interview. In return, Jane Birkin replied the following words:
« These are the times when you have a real use, a dreadful word for a mother, but you can show you’re there. I saw her, being so ill, and I looked for solutions to appease her in this return to Paris.«
As the pandemic began to gain momentum, Charlotte Gainsbourg was in New York. She decided to get closer to her family by joining Paris. Filming was therefore to continue in the French capital. The latter can be done, in reality, anywhere, since it focuses on its mother, as the official synopsis indicates:
Charlotte Gainsbourg started filming her mother, Jane Birkin, to watch her like she had never done before. The modesty of one in front of the other had never allowed such a rapprochement. But through the camera, the ice breaks to bring about an unprecedented exchange, over several years, which gradually erases the two artists and bares them in a unique and universal intimate conversation to reveal a mother face have a girl.
Jane Birkin of great help for her daughter
For Version Femina, Charlotte Gainsbourg agreed to go into more detail by going back a few months, when she returned to France: “ We filmed in New York to soften the climate, but it was when we returned to Paris, at the time of the Covid-19, that it all started. I went into depression but I had planned to film. I stuck to it and my mother helped me a lot (…) She always knew how to do it when we were bad. She offered herself totally for the film. There was not only the memory of Kate, who was the real photographer, but I also wanted to show her very closely ”.
Not to mention the pandemic, the shooting was already a real ordeal for the two women, rich in emotions, beautiful and sometimes more heartbreaking. The documentary proposes to return to many memories of Jane Birkin, while also evoking the most painful. A place is thus left to Kate Barry, the daughter of Jane Birkin, tragically deceased in 2013 after having fallen from her Parisian apartment which was on the fourth floor. It was following this tragedy that Charlotte Gainsbourg decided to leave Paris for New York.
A documentary acclaimed by the press!
If Jane by Charlotte will only be released in French cinemas in January, it was previewed at the last Cannes film festival. And the critical feedback is very good! For Marie Claire, “ the moving film, stuffed with intimate memories, tells about the power of an infinite love between mother and daughter“. The spectators present the evening of the presentation did not fail to applaud at length the two women, present for the occasion. Charlotte seems to have done well to change her life, she who confided on the occasion of her presentation at the festival that she had never originally wanted to mention her famous parents:
“For years, I didn’t want to talk about my parents, I never stopped breaking free from them. It was a fixed idea. And then, I understood that I could be me without necessarily moving away. I made this film in a very selfish way. Not for the public, but to please me ”
