Max Verstappen can crown himself as world champion in Formula 1 at the next race, in Saudi Arabia. However, it is a theoretical chance, because it seems that the decision will only come in the final race, in Abu Dhabi. But what has to happen if Verstappen already wants to take the title in Saudi Arabia?

Lewis Hamilton managed to win the Qatar Grand Prix today, further reducing the gap to Verstappen to eight points. Hamilton now has seven wins, while Verstappen has nine to his name. So it promises to be a blood-curdling final phase of the Formula 1 season. With two races to go, nothing is certain yet. In theory, Verstappen has the best papers, although Hamilton seems to be gaining momentum at the moment. However, the Briton can only secure the title in Abu Dhabi, while Verstappen can already do it in Saudi Arabia. How? You can read that below.

Verstappen champion in Saudi Arabia?

Can Verstappen already secure the championship during the next race in Saudi Arabia? Yes. But this is only a theoretical probability. Verstappen currently has an eight-point lead over rival Hamilton. With two races to go, Verstappen must increase his lead in Saudi Arabia to at least 26 points. Because his lead is now eight points, it is enough for Verstappen to get 18 points more than Hamilton in Saudi Arabia.

If Verstappen wins in Saudi Arabia, Hamilton can be seventh at most. An extra point for the fastest race lap also helps the Mercedes– captain then not. In theory, this extra point could bring Hamilton – after Abu Dhabi – on the same level, but Verstappen then has more victories to his name, so that the title goes to him.

Even if Verstappen finishes second in Saudi Arabia, this may be enough. But this only applies if Hamilton does not get any points during this race. The second place gives Verstappen 18 points. With his current lead of 8 points, this brings his total lead to 26 points. This is also the maximum number of points Hamilton can still get in Abu Dhabi, and then we come to the fact that Verstappen has more victories to his name.
