A migrant crisis is also expected on the Latvian-Belarusian border / Article

During his visits to the Baltic States, the Polish Prime Minister discusses the crisis on the borders of BelarusUģis Lībietis

The crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border has been going on for several weeks now, and although the situation seems to have subsided after Alexander Lukashenko’s telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, there are still attempts by migrants to enter the European Union illegally. That is why the Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Moravjecki, visited all three Baltic states this weekend to discuss common regional and geopolitical challenges and find solutions to them.

After meeting with Latvian Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (“New Unity”) at a press conference, Moraveckis said that the Belarussian regime was using the people of the Middle East as a weapon to create a migration crisis at the border. “In fact, everything is run by the Lukashenko regime. Consequently, this crisis, which has developed on the Polish-Belarusian, Lithuanian-Belarusian, Latvian-Belarusian borders, is actually quite severe, ”said the Polish Prime Minister.

At the same time, he warned that “another crisis awaits us – also on the Latvian border”.

He informed that the regime of the authoritarian leader of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, had transported migrants from the Polish border to a distribution center to be forwarded to the Baltic borders. These are a few dozen or hundreds of migrants.

“This is just proof that in the hands of Lukashenko, in the hands of Minsk, these people are the means in this game,” Moraveckis added.

He also urged that there was a real possibility that NATO’s eastern flank and the European Union’s external border would be attacked in various ways. The risks and threats are clear and unambiguous. Only together can we reduce the threat, the politician said.

Speaking about the next steps, the Polish Prime Minister emphasized that the most important thing was to speak one language. This means working together, for example, with the countries of the Middle East. Such actions have already yielded results. and air transport to potential migrants in Belarus has also been suspended.

Matthew Moravjeckis also emphasized that great attention should be paid to combating disinformation and resisting Russian and Belarusian propaganda. According to the Polish Prime Minister, all these issues will be discussed at the next European Council.

However, some steps are being taken now. “We have already closed one of the main border crossing points and we are ready to close others. We can also close trade between Belarus, Poland and the European Union, but we do not want to do so knowing that such economic sanctions will be much more painful. However, we see that the current sanctions imposed on individuals and preventing them from entering the European Union are not enough. That is why the joint response of the whole of the European Union and of the whole transatlantic society is so important. And that is why the voice of strong common sense of Poland and the Baltic States is needed to confront evil now, not after another escalation of aggression between Belarus and Russia, ”said Moravjeckis.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Latvia emphasized the unity of nations in this crisis: In fact, we are witnessing the opposite process: Europe is now coming closer together. “

Kariņš also revealed that Latvia plans to send trained police officers and border guards to Poland.

The Latvian Prime Minister sees the repatriation of migrants from Belarus back to their home countries as a solution to the current situation. This could be done through the United Nations.

Kariņš also stated that in reality we cannot talk about just one migration crisis, but a highly targeted hybrid war attack, which has many aspects. “We have a hybrid attack with these imported migrants. That is one aspect. Secondly, we are seeing a significant number and concentration of Russia’s armed forces on the Ukrainian border. Then we see talk of Nord Stream 2 and gas prices, energy prices in Europe, which is also part of it all. And the fourth element that has also been mentioned is the growing disinformation campaign against Europe recently. The goal is clear – to divide the European Union in one way or another, “said Kariņš.

Joint press conference of the Prime Ministers of Latvia and Poland:

Even before visiting Latvia, Moravjeckis also met with the Prime Minister of Lithuania Ingrida Šimonīte. During the meeting, Moravjeckis said that diplomatic contacts between Russia, Belarus, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan have intensified and that this could indicate an attempt to use the fragile situation in Afghanistan to create a future migration crisis.

It is expected that the situation in Belarus will be discussed at an international conference in Vienna on Monday, which will be attended not only by European leaders, but also by representatives of the democratic opposition in Belarus.

Previously LTV reported, referring to information provided by Polish human rights activiststhat a group of migrants expelled from Poland are now being diverted to the Belarusian-Latvian border.

CONTEXT:

In the summer of 2021 the number of migrants increased significantly, which is trying to enter the territory of Latvia, Lithuania and Poland illegally from Belarus. Most migrants are arrived from Iraq.

Officials in the Baltic States and Poland pointed out that the Belarusian authorities deliberately do not obstruct the crossing of the borderto punish these countries for supporting the Belarusian opposition and sanctions against Alexander Lukashenko’s regime.

The European Union will do so described as the deployment of hybrid warfare and promises to help strengthen the EU’s external border.

On November 8, a large group of migrants gathered at the Belarusian border with Poland, trying to enter the territory of the European Union, but Poland refuses to allow these people because they believe that they are not refugees, but “tourists” who have come to Belarus voluntarily.
