Verstappen to the stewards due to possible double yellow flag violation

Max Verstappen has to report to the stewards on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM (11:00 AM Dutch time) because of a possible violation under the double yellow flags. The Dutchman is suspected of not being delayed enough in the final phase of qualifying. If he is found guilty, there is a good chance that he will receive a grid penalty.

In the final phase of qualifying for the Qatar Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly suddenly had a blowout on the straight. This resulted in a double yellow flag. This means that the drivers have to reduce their speed significantly, otherwise they risk being penalized. Verstappen drove past Gasly’s car just after the incident. The Red Bull driver is now suspected of not having slowed down enough and has therefore been called to the stewards.

Such a violation in qualifying always results in a grid penalty for a driver. For example, Verstappen was given a three-place grid penalty during the Mexican Grand Prix in 2019 for a similar violation under a single yellow flag. A penalty under the double yellow flag could be even more severe.

Verstappen must report to the race management at the Losail International Circuit on Sunday morning at 11:00 AM Dutch time. Then there will be a decision. So we will have to be patient a little longer.
