La Palma International Airport was closed again yesterday. The reason is an increase in the amount of volcanic ash that hangs like a cloud over the Canary Island.
At least 20 domestic flights have been canceled due to the activity of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, Spanish airport company Aena reports. It is unknown how long the airport will remain closed. Airports on the other Canary Islands will remain open as usual.
The volcano has been active since September 19. Since then, more than 1450 buildings have been completely destroyed. An area the size of 1400 football fields is covered by a layer of lava meters thick. More than 7,000 people have had to leave their homes. Last week a first person came for life by the volcanic eruption.
Last Friday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez paid a visit to La Palma. He promised more support to restore the economy and infrastructure.
