Three weeks ago, VRT radio journalist Chris Van den Abeele was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He has to be operated on, but that operation is being postponed due to the fourth corona wave.

On the website of the VRT news editors Chris Van den Abeele testifies about the postponement of the operation. He first tells that a “treatment plan” was drawn up. The prostate and surrounding lymph nodes must be removed. And that operation is urgent.
But earlier this week, Van den Abeele was told that the operation will be postponed to early next year at the earliest. He writes: “Since the last corona wave, there is still a “catch-up” going on. The agendas are fully booked, perhaps with patients for whom it is even more urgent.”
But the radio journalist is also angry. Not on healthcare, but on all those who have not been vaccinated. After all, half of the Covid patients in intensive care are not vaccinated, while they only make up 10 percent of the total population.
Van den Abeele turns to them: “Do you realize that you are part of a group that is responsible for delaying my treatment and that of countless other patients? And do you realize that – sorry for the drama – this could be a matter of life or death for me and them?”
