Austria faces a tantrum COVID-19. The country has seen another sizable spike in cases in recent times.
A few days after imposing a lockdown for the unvaccinated, the Austrian government announced a lockdown or lockdown total national scale starting on Monday (11/22/2021).
Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said the lockdown would last a maximum of 20 days and there would be a legal requirement to get vaccinated from February 1, 2022.
He was responding to a record number of cases and his country is still one of the lowest vaccination coverage in Western Europe. Many other European countries have imposed restrictions as cases rise.
“We don’t want a fifth wave,” Schallenberg said after meeting the governors of Austria’s nine provinces BBC.
For a long time, there was a consensus to avoid mandatory vaccinations, the chancellor said. Yet too many people are incited not to get injections, political pressure and fake news.
The latest figures show the COVID-19 incidence rate in Austria has risen to 1,049.9 cases per 100,000 people in the past week, and Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein said imposing a lockdown was a “last resort”.
A record 15,809 cases were reported in the last 24 hours, in a population of under nine million.
Under the measures, Austrians will be asked to work from home, non-essential shops will be closed, and schools will remain open for children who need face-to-face learning. They will continue until December 12, but will be reassessed after 10 days.
