Latvia and other allies are currently lobbying for a proposal to establish an EU training mission in Ukraine, said Minister of Defense Artis Pabriks (AP).
Pabriks called on the European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels this week to support the initiative of Latvia, Lithuania and Poland to establish a military training mission in Ukraine “under the EU flag”.
The EU has previously used such missions in other countries, and Latvia, Lithuania and Poland have put forward a proposal to establish such a mission in Ukraine, as it is an EU ally in need of military reform, Pabriks explained.
It is envisaged that Latvia, Lithuania and Poland would assume a great deal of responsibility for the mission. “We are currently negotiating and we are lobbying for this proposal,” Pabriks said.
However, the Minister did not mention the specific number of Latvian National Armed Forces (NAF) instructors to be sent, as the decision to start the mission has not yet been made.
