Oscar Tabarez is no longer Uruguay coach. In a statement, the Executive Committee of the Uruguayan Football Federation made the decision official on Friday, speaking of a choice “Difficult, but by virtue of the present circumstances, engaged in the near future and obtaining the results that we all hope for”.

This decision was notably taken after the disillusionment suffered in Bolivia (0-3) last Tuesday. La Céleste remains on a series of 4 losses in the South American group of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup. With 4 days remaining, Uruguay occupies a worrying 7th place and is for the moment eliminated from the qualifying places in Qatar.

Coach for 15 years
It is however a monument of the Uruguayan selection which is thanked. Oscar Tabarez (74) was indeed the coach of the Celeste for 15 years, and a nomination dating from March 21, 2006, the day after the elimination of the Uruguayans during the qualifying play-offs for the German World Cup against Australia (1 -0, 0-1, 2-4 on penalties).
