those we will listen to tomorrow according to Chris Liebing

German producer Chris Liebing is back on November 19 with the album Anoth­er Day. On this occasion, the DJ presents us his playlist NEW FUTURES, filled with artists from the future, but also from the past because “The past influences the future and the future influences the past”. Come on, okay, but it’s good because it’s you!

A veteran of the German scene, Chris Liebing has long been the spearhead of hard-line and energetic techno. Helping age, the label’s boss CLR has gradually softened, until it created a surprise three years ago by signing on the legendary British label Mute. With the album Burn Slow, he hinted at a more sensitive and complex personality, partially moving away from the dancefloor and securing the services of vocalists such as Gary Numan. Anoth­er Day is in a way the continuation of it and – the confinements being undoubtedly not foreign to it – deviates even more from the club culture. Except with the silky and minimalist deep techno of the hovering “Something Half Way”, Liebing opts here for more intimate and compact formats – the songs oscillating between 4 and 6 minutes – with a lot of vocals. Always supported by machines Ralf Hilden­beu­tel, he summons the new wave and the synth-pop of his adolescence – “Circles” with the singer Tom Adams, where the spleen of Depeche Mode hovers -, but also the post-punk – the distressing “Patterns” with Maria Uzor from group Sink Ya Teeth – or theIDM/ ambient from the 90s – the dreamlike and ghostly “Hollow Town”. A dense and thoughtful album, encouraging introspection. Chris Liebing has never been more exciting than 50 years ago.

Plan­e­tary Assault Sys­tems — Say It Loud

As we all know, the past influences the future and the future influences the past. That’s why I’m starting with a track from Planetary Assault Systems, also known as Luke Slater, which has been making amazing music for thirty years and releasing a new album on Token Records. “Say It Loud” is one of his first singles. This man is always someone to watch and at the same time it is worth taking a look at his prolific and inspiring past.

Peter Gabriel – Biko

If I had to name one person who influenced me musically, especially when it comes to my albums on Mute, it would be Peter Gabriel. The title “Biko” is in a way a model of what I’m trying to reproduce, both in terms of atmosphere and sound. You can judge if I succeeded.

Mas­sive Attack — Unfin­ished Sympathy

If I had to pick just one track, say the only one I would be allowed to listen to for the rest of my life on a desert island, this would be it.

Chris Liebing — Fault Line (Plaid Remix)

The incredible poet and singer Miles Cooper Seaton passed away far too soon, but he left behind some truly amazing music that I invite you all to experience. Here he is on his last collaboration he did with me for the album Anoth­er Day. The original version is the album’s opening title and this one is the Plaid Remix.

Frankie Brom­ley — Drama

If there’s one young artist you absolutely must listen to in the future, when it comes to techno (and maybe even more), it’s Frankie Bromley from Manchester. He is a young artist with incredible talent. This is his first full release on my label CLR, recently relaunched.

Frankie Goes To Hol­ly­wood — Born To Run

Trevor Horn was one of the most influential producers of the 80s and it is actually a remake of “Born To Run” by Bruce Springsteen. I have to say, I rarely like remakes more than the original, but Frankie Goes To Hollywood got it right with this one. It’s a classic for me.

David Bowie — Five Years (2012 Remasterised)

I could have chosen many, many David Bowie tracks, but “Five Years” is one track that always comes to my mind when I think of him. What an influential artist, what an inspiration for all of us who make music.

Radio­head — All I Need

The atmospheres, melodies, structures, arrangements and sounds of Radiohead have been a source of inspiration to me for many, many years. You can clearly hear it on my album Burn Slow, the first one I did for Mute in 2018.

Chris Liebing — Ghosts Of Tomorrow

Ghosts Of Tomorrow ”is one of those songs very strongly inspired by Radiohead. It is taken from Burn Slow and was produced with the incredible Ralf Hildenbeutel, who also co-produced Anoth­er Day with me.

The Nor­mal — Warm Leatherette

This is a legendary piece of music that started it all. The very first release on Mute by the boss himself, Daniel Miller who, as I can proudly say, was the executive producer ofAnoth­er Day and who has been my mentor for many, many years, not only in music, but in life as well.

Chris Liebing — Half Way

Another single fromAnoth­er Day, strongly influenced by the forty years of Mute. Again, co-produced by Ralf Hildenbeutel and mixed by Daniel Miller himself.

Depeche Mode — Halo (Live)

As a huge Depeche Mode fan, I had to include at least one of their titles. I could have chosen twenty, even fifty. “Halo,” especially the live version of their last tour, is an incredible work of art that elevates the original version to an even higher level than it already was. I attended the concert in Berlin where they recorded this version, which makes it even more special to me.

Emp­ty­set — Dissolve

Emptyset is a duo that has always broken boundaries in their sound aesthetics. They produced some pretty unusual music and I’m happy to say that they also released on CLR in the past. It is a project to follow.

Boards Of Cana­da — The Beach At Redpoint

Geogad­di is an album that I have listened to on repeat for many, many years and that I still love to listen to in its entirety. He influenced me a lot in the way I make music and the way I want it to sound, especially when it comes to the albums for Mute.

Lost Under Heav­en — $ORO

I highly recommend listening to this entire album from start to finish. Lost Under Heaven has created a masterpiece here and you should also take a look at their next album. All the ideas of this title are breathtaking, whether in terms of sound, music or arrangement.

Lost Under Heav­en, Chris Liebing — The Breath Of Light (Chris Liebing Burn Slow Remix)

I was very happy to have been able to remix one of the tracks from their last album “The Breath Of Light” with my friend and co-producer Ralf Hildenbeutel.

Cosey Fanni Tutti – Everyone

Where would we be without Throbbing Gristle? This is “Tutti” by Cosey Fanni Tutti who is part of the group Throbbing Gristle and it captures an incredible vibe, both electronic and atmospheric.

Johannes Motschmann, Chris Liebing — Lifestream (Chris Liebing Remix)

Johannes Motschmann’s original really inspired me to remix this track into something that could have been produced in the ’90s, and it works wonderfully as a closing title in every DJ set.

Under­world — Two Months Off

I have always been a huge Underworld fan and one song that always gives me goosebumps is “Two Months Off”. The energy it gives off is out of the ordinary.

The Cure — Close­down (Remas­tered)

Of course, The Cure can’t be missing from this list, and this track is taken from what I think is the best album ever made: Dis­in­te­gra­tion. Che group is fantastic. My last track from the album Anoth­er Day is also called “Closedown” and now you know why.
