Money for change – cities demand billions – politics

The German Association of Cities is demanding 500 million euros annually from the federal government for a period of five years in order to shape change in the cities. “We want to change course in transport and construction policy, push climate protection even more, conserve resources and build more and faster apartments at reasonable prices,” said the new City Council President, Münster’s Lord Mayor Markus Lewe (CDU), at the end of the general meeting on Thursday in Erfurt. “The federal government must promote this creative change beyond the federal program for sustainable inner cities,” he demanded. The CDU politician had previously been elected as the new president of the municipal umbrella association. Lewe, who was at the head of the city council from 2018 to 2019, replaced the Mayor of Leipzig, Burkhard Jung (SPD), who gave up his office on a rotating basis and is now vice-president.
