Recognize Breast Cancer Risk Factors, Here’s How to Prevent it

– –

Adi Husada Cancer Center (AHCC) together with Ngopibareng.id, held a health talk show entitled “Breast Cancer Alert”. This discussion is intended to increase the understanding of women and citizens of Surabaya about the importance of preventing breast cancer.

The talk show, which was held at the Atrium Grand City Mall Surabaya, Thursday, November 18, 2021, presented doctor Tabita Novita Anggriani, SpB as a speaker.

“Speaking of breast cancer, we must first know what breast cancer is. Breast cancer is a disease that arises due to the growth of cells in the breast, typically these cells turn malignant,” said this surgeon.

Doctor Tabita revealed, the exact cause of breast cancer is not known. However, just like cancer in general, breast cancer also has risk factors. Breast cancer risk factors are broadly divided into three, namely genetic, carcinogenic and environmental.

“Genetics, related to gender, namely women have a higher risk of breast cancer, as well as genetic mutations or heredity factors. Where people with maternal or maternal ancestry have experienced cancer, will be more at risk,” explained Dr. Tabita.

Doctor Tabita continued, carcinogenic risk factors are related to radiation exposure that has been experienced. Usually this happens in areas prone to radiation exposure. “Carcinogenicity is also related to hormonal factors, menstrual history is also a risk factor. Someone who experiences menstruation earlier under the age of 12 years or has menopause longer also increases breast cancer risk factors,” he explained.

From the exposure to breast cancer risk factors above, Tabita’s doctor invites all women to do breast cancer prevention with routine mammography checks.

Mammography is recommended when a woman reaches the age of 40 years. After that, it can be done periodically once a year for breast cancer prevention steps.

In addition to the mammography examination, Tabita said there is a cheaper and easier examination that can be done independently at home, namely the SADARI (Breast Self-Examination) examination.

“Awareness is done by undressing and standing in front of a mirror while observing whether or not there are changes in the breasts. First, Awareness is done by placing hands on the waist and then observing whether there are changes in the shape of the breasts,” explained Doctor Tabita.

Then raise both hands and also observe whether the breasts can move freely or not. The next step, check the breast rotation to see if there is a lump or not. The right breast is examined with the left hand and the left breast with the right hand. Alternately.

“Recognizing this is done on the 7th day after the first day of menstruation. So for example, menstruation ends on the 10th, do Awareness on the 17th. This examination is recommended to be carried out once a month,” he added.

Finally, Dr. Tabita did not forget to invite the public, especially women, to have regular check-ups with the doctor and have a healthy lifestyle to prevent breast cancer.
