Formation of a new government takes longer than expected – EURACTIV.de

Treasury Secretary Magdalena Andersson has been given extra time to seek parliamentary support for the formation of a government. Parliament’s President Andreas Norlén has granted an extension until November 22 at noon.

Magdalena Andersson took over the chairmanship of the Social Democratic Party from Stefan Löfven last week. In order to continue the previous minority coalition with the Greens and to become the country’s first female prime minister, she would also need the silent support of two small opposition parties in order to rule with the 349-seat parliament.

The Greens are ready to continue to govern, and Ms. Andersson has secured the support of the opposition Center Party.

Negotiations are underway with the Left Party and an agreement seems very likely. On the website of the Left Party it says: “The country does not need any further government crises, and the party has entered into constructive talks with Magdalena Andersson”. The main focus of the party is on improving the lives of retirees: inside.

The Associated Press news agency, which has also followed developments, quoted Left Party leader Mehrnoosh “Nooshi” Dadgostar as saying that the talks had continued “in a good mood”.

In Sweden, the political map, which used to be divided into clear left and right blocks, has been fragmented over the past decade. This is especially true on the right, where cooperation with the populist party of the Sweden Democrats is met with strong opposition. As a result, right-wing government has become difficult, if not impossible, to form.
