Instagram Requests Account Verification via Video Selfie

Jakarta: Instagram is reportedly asking users to provide videos showing different angles of their faces to verify that they are humans and not bots.

This information is conveyed by screenshots or screenshots uploaded by social media consultant Matt Navarra to his Twitter account. This step is thought to be Instagram’s next step in eradicating bot accounts.

A number of bot accounts targeted were accounts that were judged to be spam accounts, accounts that were often used to harass people, or accounts that were used to artificially increase the number of followers or likes.

According to the quoted XDA Developer The Verge, Instagram began testing this feature in 2020, but this test was temporarily suspended due to technical problems. A number of users also reported that they were asked to take a selfie video to verify their account.

Another user on Twitter named Bettina Makalintal uploaded a screenshot, showing the steps users must take to take a selfie video to prove that they are human and are the real account owners.

Unfortunately, until now, Instagram’s parent company, Meta, has not responded to the latest security features on this social network, including availability times and other detailed information.

This step is also considered by a number of parties to be able to increase account security from potential piracy. However, not a few also doubted the decision regarding verification via selfie video, which was also considered surprising, considering that Meta is reportedly going to turn off one of its facial recognition features.

Previously Meta has confirmed that it will only turn off certain features on Facebook, and not the use of Meta’s facial recognition feature as a whole. Meanwhile, the message below the screenshot also indicates that the feature on Instagram will not use facial recognition at all.

In addition, this message also indicates that the video will be deleted after 30 days. Thus, indirectly, Meta promises not to collect user biometric data.
