HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that destroys cells in the immune system, Mother. If this virus manages to infect, it will weaken the body’s ability to fight infections and everyday illnesses.
There is currently no cure for HIV. However, as long as there exist very effective drug treatments that enable most people who suffer from the disease to and be healthy.
But recently, a miracle happened to one of the patients with HIV. This happened to an unnamed Argentine woman.
It is known, he became the second person in the world to be declared ‘clean’ of HIV after being infected in 2013. Moreover, it is also called heal naturally without treatment whatever, you know.
This woman was then dubbed the ‘Esperanza patient’. The name is taken from his residence in Argentina. Previously, this woman was first diagnosed with HIV-1 in 2021. Then after 8 years of follow-up examinations, with a total of 10 viral load tests, there is currently no evidence of infection.
In addition to the Esperanza patient, there were two other cases of patients who were also declared cured of HIV infection. The two are Timothy Ray Brown aka the ‘Berlin patient’ who was diagnosed positive in 1995 and the ‘London patient’ diagnosed in 2003.
However, these two people are different from the Esperanza patient. This is because they are declared HIV-free after undergoing stem cell transplantation.
Since then, scientists have been trying to learn how the body naturally fights the virus. Including without the help of drugs or transplants, which are very rare and they are called ‘elite controllers’.
Among these elites, Esperanza patients are quite reckoned with. This is because usually, there are still signs of the virus being detected and being wary of.
According to the researchers, what happened to Esperanza patients was another level. This woman appears to be completely clear of HIV-1 replication.
During 8 years of follow-up examinations, she only took ART (antiretroviral) once, which was when she was pregnant between 2019-2020.
“What distinguishes it from other ‘elite controllers’ is the absence of the HIV-1 provirus and particulate matter HIV virus-1 which can replicate in many cells,” said the scientist.
The only case that resembles the Esperanza patient is Californian patient Loreen Willenberg. This patient did not show any infection on examination of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs).
“Does this imply that our patient established a cure that naturally sterilizes the infection? We believe it is, but cannot prove it,” the scientists said.
