UNGA Committee approved draft enhanced resolution on Crimea

The draft resolution, approved by the UN General Assembly committee, mentions the Crimean Platform.

The UN General Assembly Committee approved a draft enhanced resolution on the human rights situation in the annexed Crimea. About it informs Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba on Twitter on Wednesday, November 17.

“I welcome the adoption of the draft enhanced resolution on the human rights situation in Crimea, which has just passed the 3rd committee of the UN General Assembly. For the first time, support for the Crimean platform was recorded. The document also calls on the Russian Federation to release Ukrainian political prisoners and ensure the rights of the Crimean Tatar people,” Kuleba wrote.

The minister added that the resolution will be approved at the UN General Assembly session in December.

“I am grateful to all UN member states that supported this important draft resolution. Its approval at the UN General Assembly session in December will further consolidate international support for Ukraine on the path to restoring our territorial integrity,” the Foreign Minister noted.

The key innovations in the resolution were the reflection in its title of the status of Crimea as a temporarily occupied peninsula, support for cooperation in the Crimean platform, emphasis on Russia’s responsibility for observing the rights of Crimean Tatars as the indigenous people of Crimea, and the demand to cancel sentences passed in absentia to the leaders of the Crimean Tatar people.

In addition, the resolution emphasizes that the buildup of the military on the peninsula and the numerous exercises of the Russian armed forces entail long-term negative consequences in the region, in particular, making it difficult to ensure the fundamental rights of the civilian population.

Finally, the resolution notes the exclusive responsibility of Russia as an occupying state in providing the inhabitants of the peninsula with drinking and fresh water. The illegal actions of the Russian Federation to destroy or move the cultural and natural values of Ukraine located in Crimea are also condemned.

Recall that earlier the Foreign Ministry expects joining the UN to the Crimean platform… In Kiev, they also noted that an important task remains the embodiment of efforts to reform and improve the UN, its adaptation to the requirements of our time.
