(CNN Español) — The Concacaf teams played this Tuesday the last date of the qualifying year for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, in a day with decisive crosses for several of the countries that aspire to reach the World Cup event.
Canada was the only leader of the tie with 16 points after their victory over Mexico, which linked two defeats in this double day before their North American rivals. The game was played in cold, snowy Edmonton.
Canada accumulates three victories in line and 8 matches without losing. Cyle Larin, a Besiktas player, scored a double and was a figure.
“An incredible night. The atmosphere in the stadium was electrifying and the boys came out to play with their hearts,” said Canadian Atiba Hutchinson, who broke the Canucks record for appearances in his 90th game.
“We left everything on the pitch. We knew how important this game was and we wanted to go out on the pitch and put it on record.”
“The work ethic that we have put in is something special. I have not seen anything like it,” he added.
Only three Concacaf teams automatically qualify for the World Cup, with the fourth-placed team making the play-offs.
Currently, Canada is one point ahead of the United States, with Mexico and Panama just two points behind.
The United States, which tied with Jamaica, is second with 15 points and Mexico third with 14. Panama has the same points, in the playoff spot.
Although the classification of Mexico is not yet in the picture, the Tata Martino team leaves many doubts and that even with the team in playoffs leaves much to be desired.
Costa Rica beat Honduras and was left with 9 points, still far from disputing the Panamanians for fourth place.
The Concacaf qualifiers will resume next year when three rounds are played between January 27 and February 2.
