It has been queuing all morning on the Antwerp ring road in the direction of Ghent. Due to an accident between two trucks in the Kennedy tunnel, only one lane was available for more than an hour and a half, resulting in long traffic jams.

At around 6.30 am, an accident occurred between two trucks in the Kennedytunnel in the direction of Ghent. As a result, only one lane was free until 7.10 am, because one truck had to be towed and the road surface had to be cleaned because fuel had leaked. “The Kennedytunnel is the most saturated highway point in the province of Antwerp, with around 80,000 vehicles passing through it every day,” says Peter Bruyninckx of the Flemish Traffic Center. “If something like this happens there, it is immediately felt in the wider area and results in long traffic jams.”
Around 8 o’clock we see the aftermath of this: it takes up to an hour to queue in the direction of Ghent for those coming from the A12, the E19 and the E313. “We saw the map turn red in no time. The point where the accident happened has been released, but those traffic jams will no longer disappear.” The Liefkenshoek tunnel was therefore made toll-free. It is recommended to take a different road if you have to go in that direction.
