This week, the cinema’s repertoire includes films that premiered in October at the Riga International Film Festival (RigaIFF) including the opening film of the festival, a Latvian-Italian co-production I was born in Rosellini (in cinemas from 15 November) – a documentary about a significant family in cinema history, whose ancestor is the Italian neorealist classic Roberto Rosellini and the film’s director is his grandson Alessandro Rosellini. Latvia is represented in this collaboration by the studio VFS Films and producer Uldis Cekulis, the main cinematographer of the film is Valdis Celmiņš, co-author of the screenplay – Dāvis Sīmanis.
“Three years ago, Alessandro Rosellini came to the B & BFilm studio with a strange idea. He was convinced that his whole family was affected by a strange illness that only a few of his relatives could recognize. He had even given it the name” rosellinitis. ” , which has the children of famous people, especially the children of a father who was able to be outstanding, domineering and missing at the same time, “says the film ‘s producer Rafael Brunetti.
The Italian director Roberto Rosellini was a rather difficult father for his children. His scandalous romance with women at the time, including Hollywood actress Ingrid Bergman, took over the front pages of newspapers and left offspring in the blood of different nations. Alessandro, the director’s eldest grandson, has an uneven career as a photographer and a long history of drug addiction. Unable to keep up with the bar imposed by his grandfather’s genius, he decides to make a film about the Rosellini saga at the age of 55, gathering his famous relatives in front of the camera for almost impossible family therapy.
From November 18, the repertoire of cinemas will include the latest feature film by director Laila Pakalniņa – a contemporary film made in the style of selfies. The story of Snow White in the Mirror. The action of the old fairy tale begins in the gym, where Snow White grows up, because her father is a cross-trainer, but the evil stepmother is overwhelmed with physical exercises of strength and dexterity. It is almost natural that the seven gnomes known from the fairy tale are enthusiasts of various unusual sports in this film – an acrobat, a park rider, a weightlifter, a bicycle equilibrist and others. All these sports characters like to film selfies, thus providing the film with an extremely unusual visual image developed by the cinematographer Gints Bērziņš.
A week later, on November 26, the spicy comedy of Andrejs Ēķis will appear on the big screens Tabu, in which the director continues in previous films (e.g. Swingers, 2016) – “what we are not talking about”.
