The new European defense efforts were not directed against NATO
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell presented plans for the development of European defense and security following a meeting of the EU Council.
He is proposing that Brussels have a stockpile of 5,000 rapid response staff and special missions to be deployed as needed. The European Council is due to rule on the proposals in March next year, writes standartnews.com.
It envisages the EU being able to act more quickly in the event of crises. From now on, countering hybrid and cyber threats will need to be more coherent, including in disinformation campaigns and other attempts at external influence. The EU will begin preparations for space defense and will strive to be a leader in the introduction of new and proprietary defense technologies. According to Borel, the next wars will be in space, BTA reported. The High Representative added that the EU must restore its independence in the production of defense equipment.
Borrell said the new European defense efforts were not aimed at NATO, but complemented the alliance’s capabilities and contributed to global security. According to him, the presented proposals have wide support among the EU countries. NATO has no alternative on the issue of Europe’s territorial defense and we are not looking for change, the High Representative explained.
