Virologist Johan Neyts and his team at the Leuven Rega Institute have a promising vaccine candidate against the delta variant. In tests on hamsters, the vaccine has been shown to be extremely effective.
KU Leuven researchers have been looking for a vaccine since the start of the pandemic. They have already achieved promising results, but have again started to tinker with the emergence of the more contagious delta variant.
According to Neyts, the new candidate must be effective against the four main variants: alpha, beta, gamma and delta. To get it on the market, a lot of water still has to flow to the sea. Human testing and large-scale production require investors with several hundreds of millions of euros available.(agg)
