The Dutch writer Arnon Grunberg has been living in New York City for several years. In the run-up to the presidential elections, he is making the documentary series European in New York, in which Grunberg gives his view of American society.

The author of literary successes like Blue Mondays on Tirza left for New York in 1995 and will now, in 2020, become an American. Grunberg also wonders what exactly changes when you get a passport from another country. In two episodes a week (European in New York can be seen every Saturday and Sunday) Grunberg considers American society through a number of important themes: religion, emigration, ethnicity, health care, the military and the deep belief in the American position of exception.
