Diabetics are advised to have their kidneys checked every year.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Internal medicine specialist from the University of Indonesia, Dr Bhanu Kumar, BMedSc, SpPD, advises diabetic patients to have their kidneys checked every year if they don’t have any abnormalities. “We usually use a benchmark for kidney function, if there are abnormalities, it can be repeated. If there are severe abnormalities per month, mild abnormalities per 3 months, if there are no abnormalities, it can be per year or per 6 months,” he said in an online media gathering, Tuesday (16 /11).
Due to diabetes, small blood vessels in the body can be injured. When the blood vessels in the kidneys are injured, the kidneys cannot clean your blood properly.
Your body will retain more water and salt than it should, which can lead to weight gain and ankle swelling. Diabetes can also cause nerve damage in your body.
This can cause difficulty in emptying your bladder. The resulting pressure from your full bladder can injure your kidneys, according to the page kidney.org.
In addition to the kidneys, Bhanu suggested an eye examination to see whether there are complications in order to prevent blindness which has an impact on decreasing the quality of life. Examination is also recommended on cholesterol levels.
If there are abnormalities, the examination can be repeated every three months, while if there are no abnormalities, it is recommended to have an examination once a year. Those with complications such as foot problems, can consult a surgeon for treatment, for example, foot injuries.
Bhanu quoted the recommendation of the Indonesian Endocrinology Association (PERKENI) saying that it was not only doctors but also patients who played a role in managing their diabetes. In order to achieve this, doctors need to teach patients such as a good diet, proper exercise to self-checking blood sugar to keep blood sugar stable.
“We are starting to share the responsibility for managing diabetes, so our patients tell us this is a disease” yes You have to be responsible and know how to handle yourself,” said Bhanu.
In terms of exercise, for example, patients need to know the right choice, namely cardio to increase pulse. As for intake, you should choose a balanced amount and type according to the body’s needs.
“For a higher fiber intake, don’t have too high carbohydrates, that doesn’t mean it” no carbs, carbs are still needed. The important thing is a balanced intake, there are carbohydrates, protein, fat, fiber,” said Bhanu.
