Twenty-seven EU countries have reached a consensus on imposing sanctions on Russia’s Wagner paramilitary company, which the West says could intervene in Mali, EU security and foreign policy chief Josep Borel (pictured) said today. France Press.
The ruling junta in Bamako is threatening to use the services of a private company suspected of being close to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“There is a consensus on restrictive measures against this group. They will be determined as soon as the work is completed at the technical level,” Borel said after a meeting of European foreign ministers in Brussels.
He added that these measures could be adopted at the next meeting of foreign ministers, scheduled for December 13th.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian explained that these were sanctions against members of the paramilitary company and against companies that work directly with it. “There is a threat in Mali,” he told a news conference.
