Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Cristiano Ronaldo make a promise to the fans Portugal national team after losing 1-2 to Serbia in 2022 World Cup Qualification at the Da Luz Stadium, Monday (15/11) early morning Indonesian time.
As a result of the defeat, Portugal was ranked second in the final standings of Group A after only collecting 17 points from eight matches. Meanwhile, Serbia is top of the standings with a collection of 20 points.
This condition made the team nicknamed the Selecao Das Quinas fail to qualify directly for the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar. Portugal still has the opportunity to appear in Qatar through the play-off round.
After failing to qualify directly for the 2022 World Cup Ronaldo made a promise to Portuguese supporters. The promise was written by the player nicknamed CR7 in an upload on social media.
“For Portugal and for [bangsa] Our Portuguese want to be present, once again, at the World Cup,” Ronaldo said.
“And with the strength of Portugal and Portugal we will get there! We count on your support! Towards Qatar 2022!,” Ronaldo added.
At the international break this time Portugal’s performance was not as brilliant as the previous periods. In two matches in the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers, Fernando Santos’ team failed to win in two consecutive matches.
After being matched by the Republic of Ireland 0-0 at the Viva Stadium, Friday (12/11) early in the morning, now the Euro 2016 champions have been humiliated by Serbia at home.
In the last match in Group A, Portugal took the lead through Renato Sanchez’s goal in the second minute. But Serbia equalized before the break through Dusan Tadic (33′).
Disastrous for Portugal occurred in the 90th minute after Aleksandar Mitrovic broke into Rui Patricio’s goal.
Ronaldo and Portugal can qualify directly for the 2022 World Cup finals if they draw with Serbia. Despite having the same value, Portugal is superior in goal productivity and head to head with Serbia.
Portugal’s performance is in line with Ronaldo. In the last two matches CR7 failed to make a direct contribution to the national team, either through goals or assists.
