Austria has launched a house for people who have not been vaccinated against Covid-19

The House, which is to be observed by two million of the country’s nearly nine million people, is set for ten days, but will be considered for extension.

People 12 years of age and older who have not been vaccinated against Covid-19 or who have contracted it are allowed to leave their home only to buy basic necessities, get medical help, walk or exercise.

Police patrols have been stepped up to monitor non-vaccinators’ compliance with the meeting, and offenders face a € 500 fine.

The assembly is set by a government decision and is expected to be approved by parliament.

Coronavirus infection has reached record levels in Austria. On Sunday, 11,552 new infections were reported the previous day, compared with 8,554 a week earlier.

65% of the Austrian population have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, which is less than the European Union (EU) average of 67%.

Austria is the first in the EU to start vaccinating five to 11-year-olds against Covid-19.

The European Medicines Agency has not yet approved the use of any vaccine in this age group, although EU Member States have the power to decide for themselves in an emergency.

This month, the Austrian government announced that only those who have been vaccinated against or infected with Covid-19 will be allowed to visit restaurants, hotels and cultural institutions.
