In Austria, there will be a lockdown on Monday for those who have not been fully vaccinated against the corona virus. This is the result of top talks between Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg and state leaders.

Those who have not been vaccinated or have recovered from the virus may only leave their home for essential activities, such as shopping, working or seeing a doctor. The measure will be in effect for ten days and will affect approximately two million people. Schallenberg announced that very consistent random checks will be made and that penalties for infringements will be correspondingly.
Austria has a vaccination rate of about 65 percent. Schallenberg called that “embarrassingly low” last week and that should be raised. “If the vaccination rate remains as it is, we will remain stuck in a vicious circle” of corona infections, he said on Sunday. The seven-day index per 100,000 inhabitants has risen to about 815 in the country. That is more than 1,700 among the unvaccinated.
Unvaccinated people are already faced with restrictions in Austria. The country switched to a so-called 2G model this month. This means that some indoor locations, such as restaurants and cinemas, are only accessible to people who have been vaccinated or cured from Covid-19. The introduction of that rule has already led to queues at vaccination centers.
