Sony’s console has been a year old, and the availability of the console hasn’t improved much since last year (say, the demand isn’t that high here, but it’s a matter of detail).
Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment a PlayStation Blogon wrote after the PlayStation 5 turned one on November 12th. Here, he writes, Sony continues to experience historical demand for the new console and understands that many consumers feel frustrated with limited inventory, but they are now making every effort to ship as many consoles as possible (even they themselves through PlayStation Direct, but it doesn’t work in Hungary yet). Ensuring more supply became Ryan’s primary responsibility, and then added that they appreciate our patience as the industry overcomes these unexpected international challenges (because Sony isn’t alone in this, as Microsoft has also run into trouble with it).
Ryan’s comment came shortly after Bloomberg reported the opposite: in this, the site wrote that the PlayStation 5 had to be cut back due to a lack of parts. The goal is to produce 16 million consoles this year, but this has been reduced to 15 million by the “blues”. Sony’s chief financial officer Totoki Hiroki reportedly told investors as early as the end of October, and the rationale behind the coronavirus pandemic is behind it.
In the first year of the PlayStation 5, we brought together 4.6 billion hours of gameplay, of which more than 26 million hours were streamed to others. Many exclusive (or console-exclusive) titles came out this year: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Returnal, Deathloop, Demon’s Souls, Death Stranding: Director’s Cut, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, Destruction AllStars, and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed on consoles. But what are the top 10 we’ve spent the most time with so far? Well, it will be surprising that the list is not precisely these exclusive:
- Fortnite
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
- FIFA 21
- NBA 2K21
- Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla
- Destiny 2
- MLB The Show 21
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Demon’s Souls
- NBA 2K22
The big surprise is the single-player titles, especially from Sony’s workshops: in addition to the Spider-Man game in 8th place, we can also see the Demon’s Souls remake in 9th place, and these aren’t exactly multiplayer-sharpened creations like Fortnite.
So that was it first year… But it could have been much better.
