Darmstadt / Offenbach (dpa / lhe) – The first cities in Hesse ring in the Advent season with the opening of their Christmas markets. It starts today in Darmstadt and Offenbach, for example. In view of the magic of the booth in the middle of the pandemic with currently increasing numbers of infections, one thing is clear: drinking mulled wine, shopping for gifts and snacking on chestnuts is only possible if the applicable distance and hygiene rules are observed.
Darmstadt is planning the Christmas market in a decentralized manner: stalls, stands and rides are spread over different places in the city in order to create more space and avoid crowds in narrow aisles. One should not ignore, so Mayor Jochen Partsch (Greens), “that we are in the middle of the fourth wave of the pandemic and that caution is still called for”.
In Offenbach, too, visitors have to pay attention to the corona regulations. “Since the Christmas market takes place mainly outdoors, the hygiene concept primarily relies on maintaining the clearances in the outdoor area and pointing out pandemic-friendly behavior,” the city said. The 2G rule applies in covered lounge areas and indoors: Access only for vaccinated and convalescent people. A special service is also planned: there will be a mobile vaccination station on three days at the Offenbach Christmas market.
