Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Thousands of citizens Thailand down to the streets of the Thai capital, Sunday (14/11/2021). Citizens demanded the reform of the monarchy of the kingdom now ruled by King Maha Vajiralongkorn.
They also opposed the court’s ruling that the demands for reform were a covert attempt to overthrow the kingdom. Previously, the Constitutional Court ruled that the demand to reform the kingdom, which has been widely circulated since August 2020, was unconstitutional and designed to overthrow the institution.
The protests have been led by the pro-democracy movement, which has called for the removal of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha since last year. Protesters lined up in front of riot police carrying placards reading “No Absolute Monarchy” and “Reform not Abolish (Kingdom)”.
“The king’s increased power in recent years is pulling Thailand away from democracy and back to an absolute monarchy,” one protester read out a demonstrator’s statement. Reuters.
“This is a struggle to assert that this country should be ruled by a system where everyone is equal.”
In Thailand, this kind of protest is actually taboo. The country has a lese majeste law that can impose sentences of up to 15 years for those who criticize the monarchy.
It is known that three protesters were injured because of this protest. A police spokesman said the cause of the incident was being investigated.
