Croatia to 2022 World Cup thanks to Russia’s own goal

Split

Croatia made it to 2022 World Cup after beating Russia 1-0. Goals in this match were born through suicide.

Croatia hosted Russia at Poljud Stadium in the final match of World Cup Qualification Group H, Sunday (11/14/2021) night WIB. Vatreni must win to lock up a direct ticket to Qatar 2022 and Russia just need a draw.

Croatia immediately pressed at the start of the match. A shot from Ivan Perisic successfully leads to the opponent’s goal, but the ball can still be blocked by goalkeeper Matvey Safonov.

Three minutes later it was Andrej Kramaric who threatened Russia. His header from close range was still able to be saved by Safonov.

Russia was completely unattended and appeared to be playing it safe. Croatia then made another attempt in the 27th minute through Marcelo Brozovic’s shot from outside the box, but it was also saved by the opposing goalkeeper.

After repeatedly pressing in the first half, Croatia never got a goal. The score 0-0 lasted until halftime.

Croatia immediately threatened at the start of the second half, which was precisely in the 46th minute. Mario Articleic let the ball go with a header, but Safanov deftly saved the net.

Russia defended very deep. Croatia were forced to make more passes straight into the penalty area and in the 60th minute there was a header from Bruno Petkovic that almost scored.

Croatia finally got a goal in the 81st minute. A cross accidentally hit the foot of Fedor Kudryashov, who then rolled into his own goal.

The goal led Croatia to a 1-0 victory. Zlatko Dalic’s team then earned a ticket to the 2022 World Cup as Group H winners after collecting 23 points.

Russia still has a chance to qualify despite being runners-up in Group H with 22 points. Valeri Karpin’s team will have to fight through the play-offs.
