A rare painting by Gustave Caillebotte, “Young man at his window”, was bought Thursday evening for 53 million dollars by the Getty museum in Los Angeles, smashing the French painter’s record, during the sale of an impressionist collection at Christie’s At New York.
The Cox collection, named after the Texas industrialist who died in 2020 Ed Cox, also included three works by Vincent Van Gogh, which totaled more than $ 150 million, including an oil on canvas, “Cabanes de bois dans les oliviers et cypress “, sold for $ 71.3 million, becoming one of the painter’s most expensive.
Another painting by Paul Cézanne, “L’Estaque aux toits rouges”, sold for $ 55.3 million.
In total, the 23 pieces retracing the entire history of the Impressionists, also including paintings by Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Berthe Morisot, reached $ 332 million during this auction, which took place. held at the Rockefeller Center in Manhattan.
Shortly after the sound of the hammer echoed in the room for the painting by Caillebotte (1848-1894), the Getty Museum in Los Angeles welcomed in a statement to be the purchaser of this “masterpiece of modern urban realism of the 19th century (…) considered to be the most important painting of the French impressionist in private hands”.
With a dimension of 116 cm high and 81 cm wide, this oil on canvas represents a man in a dark suit with his back to his window, who seems to be looking at a woman in the distance, with a perspective view of a street and buildings Haussmannians in Paris.
The record for a Caillebotte amounted to $ 22 million, for a painting, “Rising Path”, sold at Christie’s in London in 2019.
