If you’re still waiting for a pre-ordered PS5, we don’t have much good news for you. In the face of the ongoing chip crisis, according to information Bloombergu Sony has reduced its estimate of the number of newly produced pieces of the console and therefore does not seem to be returning to the world normal. Sony anticipated that by March 2022, it would be able to produce 16 million PS5 consoles without further specification, whether it was a version with a drive or without it. However, the number is now one million pieces lower and it seems that the plan to produce a total of 14.8 million pieces by the deadline will probably not be possible.
It is important to note, however, that Bloomberg is currently relying on unofficial sources they did not wish to be named. The main problem that stands in the way of fulfilling the previously set plans is the logistics, as well as the lack of specific components. After all, in a similar vein, CTO Hiroki Totoki commented on the current situation during a discussion with investors at the end of last month. Sales in the quarter ending in September were weaker than Sony expected, and Totoki warned that any further waves of the coronavirus pandemic could have a direct impact on component deliveries. According to Bloomberg, the unfavorable forecast should therefore begin to come true these days, and it is probably only a matter of time before Sony publishes its own opinion at the appropriate time.
It is also important to note that although the PS5 became Sony’s fastest-selling console in its history in July this year, new sales are starting to lag behind the pace set by the PlayStation 4. This is due to the fact that loose pieces are gradually running out, resp. they are no longer able to pull new ones off the production lines, and after a respectable start, according to Bloomberg, a visible decline is expected. Moreover, it is not possible to plan and estimate more precisely nowadays, so it is becoming increasingly common for large companies – especially those that rely on component supplies mainly from Asian countries – to start forecasting and focus only on what the daily changing situation will bring them.
Of course, it’s not just Sony – the reduction in the volume of consoles produced was announced by Nintendo last week, and on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, we also learned about the postponement of the release of Steam Deck from Valve. In all cases, the same sounds – there are no components and it is not certain when the situation will settle. And the problem eventually starts to affect game developers or publishers who are watching the decline in interest in platform-specific versions of their titles. According to Bloomberg, the unnamed leading Japanese publisher should have expressed his disappointment that while players used to buy PS5 versions, they are now gradually moving to PC editions, which logically brings overall market spin and more far-reaching implications for the current console generation than first seem.
