The Municipal Civil Protection Commission is a coordinating and consultative institution. It shall be held in the event of a disaster or imminent disaster or any civil protection problem.
This time it was dedicated to the threat to the operation of Daugavpils Regional Hospital, because about 300 of its employees had not been vaccinated against Covid-19 and work cannot continue from Monday. At the meeting of the commission, which was also attended by the management of Augšdaugava district, the management of Daugavpils hospital and officials from Riga, all parties involved sought a solution to the crisis caused by the large number of non-vaccinated employees at the hospital. These are mostly technical staff, who will be replaced by employees of Daugavpils city and Augšdaugava municipality institutions and capital companies, as well as students of vocational education institutions who study, for example, electricians or kitchen workers.
Lists of people who could go to work on Monday will be made on weekends.
“By tomorrow’s noon, we will start making lists of the first people who could also rush to the regional hospital for help. I will repeat – we are available on an equal footing. said Andrejs Elksniņš, the mayor of Daugavpils City Council (“Harmony”).
It will not be so easy to replace medical staff who need skills to work with patients. In order for the hospital to be able to work, most of the outpatient departments will be closed, and volunteers will also help. The hospital has a total of 1,628 employees.
It is planned to replace all 89 employees with Monday, of which 37 will be nurses, 19 – nursing assistants.
We attracted colleagues from Daugavpils polyclinic and understand that it will slightly worsen the availability of outpatient services. But it must be understood that priorities must be set now: are we providing acute assistance and saving lives, or are we trying to cover everything that is not possible, ”Semyonov said.
33 students of Daugavpils University Medical College will also help. “Currently, 50 students have applied to us. It must be understood that they are 3rd, 2nd and 1st year students, “said Livija Jankovska, the head of the college.
Fortunately, fewer people will have to search than previously estimated. The number of non-vaccinated employees against Covid-19 has dropped from 300 to 247, and at the commission meeting, Grigory Semyonov, a member of the hospital’s board, said the number of non-vaccinated and retired employees could fall below one hundred by Monday, November 15th.
“I am grateful to my staff for their response. At the beginning of the week, we estimated that we would have 324 unvaccinated people by November 15, but now we see only 89 on the lists we have created. People understand that there is no other option or solution for the hospital to provide emergency care, “he said. Semyonov.
To ensure that more than 200 workers are vaccinated against Covid-19, they will be provided with a vaccination room this weekend and beyond.
In this mode, the hospital will be provided with additional forces in the Daugavpils region for 2-3 weeks. At the same time, the city hopes that employees who have not been vaccinated will be vaccinated against Covid-19 and return to work. The hospital also hopes that some students will stay there to work.
