After a phase of almost aggressive concentration on the expansion of the in-house podcast range, the music streaming service Spotify is now apparently also entering the audio book business. So the Scandinavians now have the industry service Findaway acquired, one of the world’s leading audio book distributors.
As Spotify manager Gustav Söderström reports, they have not only bought the technology and the team, but also the entire audiobook catalog and will combine the new assets with in-house know-how to revolutionize the audiobook market in exactly the same way like you’ve already done with music and podcasts.
Spotify now wants to use the technologies developed by Findaway to quickly expand its in-house audiobook catalog, but has not yet given any specific information about the direct effects the takeover will have on the audiobook offerings available via Spotify.
Apple banned audiobooks from Apple Music
It is interesting that Findaway not only has Audible and audiobooks.com on its own homepage, but also Apple as one of the active business partner. At least the triangle raises questions as to whether the takeover of the audiobook provider influenced Apple’s decision to free its own streaming offer from audiobooks.
As reported, Apple switched to delisting audiobooks from all publishers in Apple Music in mid-September. One of the largest audiobook publishers in Germany confirmed this to ifun.de – Apple, on the other hand, left our question unanswered. Apple has stopped accepting new audiobooks since mid-September. Here Cupertino has completely stopped the delivery option for interested publishers.
Audible at half the price
In this context, it is worth mentioning again: Audible, the largest audiobook provider in this country, which also offers premium audiobooks that are not available on any streaming platform, will be available for the next six months use at half the price. Any audio book of your choice is available here for EUR 4.95 per month.
The action is directed to new and existing customers.
