German in the midst of a spike in cases COVID-19 massively. Even on Thursday (11/11) local time, the European country recorded a record of more than 50 thousand in a day, the highest record since the pandemic. What happened?
As reported CNBC.com, Friday (11/12/2021), Germany was praised for its initial response to the COVID-19 pandemic, with its extensive testing program and efficient tracking, as well as high standards of health care, which helped prevent widespread infections and deaths. The country’s initial pandemic response was far more successful than its Western European neighbors, such as France and Italy.
However, like its neighbours, efforts german vaccination running slowly and having to deal with stubborn vaccine skepticism in its population. To date, 69.8% of the population in Germany have received one vaccination COVID-19 and 67.3% of the population were fully vaccinated. This is less than the 79.8% of the UK population over the age of 12 who now have fully vaccinated.
Germany’s recent sharp rise in the number of COVID-19 cases has been blamed on lower vaccination rates. This prompted politicians to call for a push for immunization campaigns.
Last week, German Health Minister Jens Spahn said: “We are currently experiencing a pandemic especially among those who are not vaccinated and it is very massive.” He also urged German citizens to get a booster vaccine.
Some of the German states worst hit by the spike in coronavirus cases, including Saxony, Bavaria and most recently Berlin, have imposed new restrictions on unvaccinated people in most indoor public places.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s candidate for successor, Olaf Scholz, said the centers vaccination Germany should reopen in a bid to encourage more citizens to be vaccinated.
“The virus is still among us and threatens the health of citizens,” Scholz said, in a speech to parliament as reported by Reuters.
