Biden signs law to ban the use of Huawei and ZTE equipment in the US

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) can no longer review and approve any applications for permission to use equipment from Chinese companies. This is because they pose an “unacceptable risk to national security.”

FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr said in a statement that the agency has approved more than 3,000 applications from Huawei since 2018. The signed law “will help ensure that dangerous equipment from companies such as Huawei and ZTE can no longer be connected to US communications networks.”

In addition, by law, the FCC has the right to revoke previous approvals issued to Chinese companies.

It is worth noting that this bill was unanimously approved by the US Senate on October 28, 2021, and by an overwhelming majority by the US House of Representatives in early November.

In March, the FCC named five Chinese companies as national security threats under a 2019 law aimed at protecting U.S. communications networks. In addition to Huawei and ZTE, these include Hytera, Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology, and Zhejiang Dahua Technology.
