Wikipedia, the collective online, universal and multilingual encyclopedia, has updated its website and now accepts Apple Pay, Apple’s contactless payment service, as a payment method. As a result, Apple users will be able to more easily donate to the non-profit organization.
Wikipedia accepts donations via Apple Pay
On Twitter, Nikolaj Hansen-Turton has indicated one button Apple Pay appeared right next to the credit card and PayPal payment options when sending a donation. Which means that iPhone, iPad and Mac users will now be able to choose an amount and send their donation to pay using the cards in the Wallet app on their Apple devices.
As a reminder, Wikipedia is a non-profit project of the Wikimedia Foundation and therefore free. That’s why Wikipedia always asks for donations from those who visit the website. The group declared :
“We’re a non-profit organization that depends on donations to stay online and thrive, but 98% of our readers don’t give; they’re just looking the other way. If everyone who reads Wikipedia gave just a little, we could make Wikipedia flourish for years to come. The price of a cup of coffee is all we ask. When we made Wikipedia a nonprofit, people told us we would regret it. But if Wikipedia were to become commercial, it would be a great loss to the world. Wikipedia is a place to learn, not a place to advertise. The heart and soul of Wikipedia is a community of people working to give you unlimited access to reliable and neutral information. “
On the other hand, Wikipedia talks about the use that is made of these donations: “The largest share (41% in 2013-2014) goes to the engineering and development of the MediaWiki software that powers Wikipedia. The second item (17% over the same period) is used to award grants to projects, such as thepurchasing photographic equipment or setting up training for new contributors. Wikipedia contributors are not remunerated. “
