Malala Yousafzai tied the knot

Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala , who was gunned down by a Taliban fighter in her native Pakistan in 2012, at the age of 15, has married. She announced this on social media on Tuesday.

Malala, who has been living in the UK for some time now, celebrated the wedding in the English city of Birmingham with the couple’s family. “Today is a precious day in my life. Asser and I tied the knot to become partners for life,” she tweeted.

Her husband, Asser, calls them by first name only. It may be Asser Malik, general manager of a cricket club, but that has not been officially confirmed.

Last July, Malala told the British magazine Vogue that she wasn’t sure she would ever get married. “I still don’t understand why people have to get married. If you want to have a person in your life, why do you have to sign marriage papers, why can’t it just be a partnership?” The comment was widely criticized in Pakistan at the time.

Activism

Malala, 24, is admired in many parts of the world, especially in Western countries, for her personal courage and activism around education for girls and women. In her native country, her activism divides public opinion.

The Taliban tried to kill her because she wrote on a weblog on the British public broadcaster BBC described the abuses in her country. In doing so, she incurred the wrath of the Muslim fundamentalists.

She got a bullet in the head. At a hospital in Rawalpindi, doctors were able to remove it. For further care, she was flown to Great Britain, where she later continued to live and attend school with her family.

She has received a series of international awards for her activism, including the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Expression. The absolute crowning event followed in 2014 with the award of the Nobel Peace Prize. At seventeen, she was the youngest winner ever.
