The drone filmed for the first time the premises of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which were not investigated after the accident in 1986, VICE reported, quoted by zashtoto.com.
The flight was performed by Flyability with the help of the Elios 2 drone developed by her. It is designed for remote inspection of dangerous places for people, mainly nuclear power plants.
A characteristic feature is the presence of a rigid outer frame around the entire structure, which allows contact with objects.
It was originally planned to inspect only a building near the power plant to test the technology. But when a group of specialists responsible for the safety of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant saw the drone’s capabilities, they demanded that the 5th Unit, where no one had been since the 1986 accident, be inspected instead of delayed.
“The Chernobyl mission was intense because the wall we had to fly through was 70 meters high, so we couldn’t return the drone if the signal was lost,” said Charles Ray, who piloted the drone.
Specialists received a large number of high-quality photos and videos from inside the power unit and made sure that there were no dangerous nuclear materials inside.
